See Jane Tri

I participated and FINISHED the See Jane Triathlon last month. It was a sprint distance Tri (400yard swim, 12 mile bike, and 5k run) It was such a great experience and I’m so glad I did it.

The months leading up to the race, I did my usual workouts at the gym and just focused on getting to the gym 5 days a week and being in good shape for the race. I don’t own a bike, so I couldn’t train on that. I figured taking group cycling class at the gym would have to do. I also didn’t swim much, I figured muscle memory right? I was excited and nervous when race day came. I headed over to Pleasanton with a friend of mine and we got our stuff set out for the event. I rented a bike for race day that I rode around the block a few times the night before.

When it came time to start the race, I was really nervous and excited! The swim came first (after a 1 hour delay!) When we all got into the water, I somehow ended up in the back of the pack, the whistle went off and everyone got right to it. I hung back and started to panic. I have no idea why…. I am a great swimmer, it was really the only event I felt comfortable in. But some how i started to freak out about swallowing water with e.coli in it, and getting kicked in the face, HA! Finally I started and realized I had really screwed up by being in the back of the pack. The water was sloshing around and I was getting kicked in the face, and swallowing water. But I managed to make it through and get it done. The water was so so gross, I just wanted to finish.

The bike portion was next. I had a little trouble getting my cloths on during transition, but once I was on the bike it was fine. I was the most nervous about the bike portion because I am the least comfortable on a bike outside. Give me a spin bike no problem, but outside, yikes! I had to concentrate really hard and learn the rules of passing people quickly. I tried to finish fast so I could get the heck off of the bike!

Back to transition area to get rid of my helmet and start the run. My legs were jelly when I first started running. I felt like I had to will them to move at that point. I ate two gummy energy chews (big mistake!) and I was off. Since the race was delayed so long, by the time I started the run it was really hot. I focused on finishing as fast as I could, but my stomach had a huge cramp from those energy chews. When I crossed the finish line, it felt so so good! I am really proud of myself for finishing and working as hard as I did. I seriously can’t wait for the NEXT one!!! I am totally hooked :-)
